Naughty or Nice? Lump of Coal Gift Boxes...

I am sure you have all seen these little lump of coal boxes at some point. If you haven't, check out how cute and what a fun idea they are. Martha, my dear friend Martha Stewart has a great little tutorial on how to make them here. I also found another tutorial on how to make them here.

Since I knew I wanted to make a few, I went all out and made 8. 8 means I have a more than I need, which means I will be selling my extras on my etsy shop here. I am only going to have these available for a short time in order to make sure they get to you by Christmas.

I however made my own tutorial as well... to show you exactly how easy these aren't, sort of or maybe I just had a harder time with them. Its quiet a task but I accomplished it and I am in LOVE with the final product.

If you are not interested in buying some, go ahead with the post and find out how to make your own...

Lump of Coal Gift Box Tutorial...

I found the boxes at hobby lobby, there were a number of shapes and after pondering for a bit I decided to be traditional and follow Martha.

Obviously the boxes need to be painted. I painted inside and out. as they were drying I did the dishes, how lovely huh?

After they are dry take some black (could be orange paper, you don't see it) card stock and kind of crumble it up any which way. I fiddled with this part for a while because I wanted it to be perfect. Trust me, it doesn't need to be. There just needs to be some mass that will hold up the other paper we put on top later. Hot glue it to the lid, center, off center, just on top of the lid somewhere.

Take a square piece of black card stock that is bigger than the lid, fold it in half, fold it in half again, undo the last fold you just did and bring the open corners to the center, like a triangle. The top of the triangle will be where the card stock is folded. Sorry I didn't take a picture. And it doesn't really matter. You're just making lines in the coal and making a point so the paper kind of elevated.

This is where I strayed from the other tutorials. I didn't read through and figured that they hot glue needed to be on the outside of the lid. The other one says hot glue it to the top of the lid. I panicked once I noticed I did it wrong, but again it doesn't have to be perfect and it didn't matter that I glued it to the sides of the lid.

You will probably run into this problem of the paper not fitting over the lid exactly. Doesn't matter much, we are still applying one more piece of paper over this. Hold the paper where you have hot glued it for a few seconds, the paper is strong so it tends to pull away until the glue is really set. When its all set, cut off the remaining paper.

I just took those weird spots and smashed it in against the lid

Top view

And the under view, yes it is ugly, but it gets much better. Oh notice how the sides of the lid don't meet the paper. I will address this later.

Now take another piece of card stock that is a bit bigger than the lid. I followed Martha's way and used fabric stiffener rather than water. I think this is key to creating a top that is as hard as a rock. So soak the paper in the stiffener for 10 seconds or so. Meanwhile apply a coat of mod podge to the top of the lid, everywhere on the lid including the sides.

Take the paper out of the solution, squeeze it so the excess stiffener runs off, open the paper and then crumple it up again. Wrap the paper around the lid in the same manner we applied the first paper. At this point it started to get really messy, my hands immediately started turning black and little black paper fibers were coming off onto my hands. No worries though!

Cut off the remaining paper

Again your probably going to get spots where the paper overlaps or looks funny. Just cut it off. You will be applying mod podge over the top (and glitter), so it will seal the weird looking parts. Plus remember it's coal, its not supposed to be super pretty. Once you've trimmed it up, apply a layer of mod podge and yes the card stock will still be wet.

I am not sure how long it took to dry completely, a few hours at least. I am sure you can find something else to craft while it's drying.

This is what it looks like after the first coat of mod podge has dried.

So remember all those gaps I had between the box and the paper? I filled them with mod podge, and now this is how it looks. Better right?

Finally apply another coat of mod podge over the top and apply glitter (while mod podge is still wet of course). You dont have to do this, I however did. After the top was all done, I put the lid on and put a layer of mod podge around the sides of the box that were not covered by the lid, then I glittered them up too. Once everything was dry, I ran my hands over the glitter to pull off all the glitter flecks that were kind of hanging on.

The final product!

My Version of the 2 x 4 Turkey...

So we have all seen it, the 2 x 4 turkey by Craft Goodies. I have to admit, I started making this turkey the moment I saw it and I didn't realize until now that Wendy and I basically used the same paper. Good old Hobby Lobby! Well Her tutorial went up today on Ucreate.

Well here is my version. Looks basically the same right? It's too cute not to share.

I Really love Wendy's version, I did however find some craft sticks at the store that I thought would make great turkey neck's/head.

Again, I need to emphasize that this turkey was not my idea, I am only copyrighting the photos in which I took. The idea belongs to Wendy over at Craft Goodies. Check her blog out, she is amazing!

Wendy sells kits for these and I just wanted to share that I also have a plethora of supplies to make one of your own. My kits will have all the supplies wood, sticks for feathers, stick for head, paper, feather, ribbon, everything except for paint, glue and sand paper... If you are interested let me know. $7 for a kit, $10 already made and $5 dollar shipping.

Thanksgiving Tee Shirt Wreath...

I am not sure where I found this idea, but I absolutely love it. I had made one last year for Halloween and decided I wasn't a big fan on the door decor I had for Thanksgiving, thus I made a thanksgiving one. I finally started a project and took pictures throughout the whole thing so I could post a little tutorial on how to make on of your own.

The best part about making this was that all of my scraps used to be shirts that just hung in my closet. So literally the project cost me $2 for the wire wreath. However my husband will tell you it cost $60 in shirts plus the $2 wreath. Well he is right, but... those shirts were old, well used and never again going to be used, so why not.

If you don't want to buy the wire wreath, use a wire hanger, mold it into a circle. Simple simple.

I started out with my 6 shirts all in fall colors. (Yes my child has to wreck anything I put on the floor.)

Cut the shirts up, using every part you can. Cut them into long strips about 2 or so inches wide first, stretch out the long strips before you cut them again. Some of the shirts are going to be more stretchy than others, giving you more material to work with. You will know if it really stretched because the edges tend to roll in and the strip gets skinny. Next cut the strips every 4-6 inches. I didn't want mine to be all the same length, I wanted some of them to stick out a bit.

I also wanted to give some texture to the wreath, I used pinking sheers on 3 of the shirts, then added a sparkly autumn orange tulle and an auburn organza ribbon.

The wire wreath frame comes with 4 wires circles on it. I cut the inside one off, thinking I wouldn't have enough scraps to go around, I was wrong. Once all your strips are cut start tying the scraps on the wire. I double tie mine so they really wont fall off, but I highly doubt that they would fall off anyway.

Tie your scraps randomly, brown, red, orange, yellow, yellow red. You get the idea. Just follow the wires around until you fill up all the wire. Blurry picture, sorry.

I kind of run my hands through to fluff it up a bit, give it some body. I love how this one turned out, the colors, the texture, makes me feel so warm. I love this time of year!

So there ya have it, go find some clothes in your closet and make one of you own!

I just realized that I never posted a picture of the Halloween one I did last year. 2 large black tee's, 1 orange tee and various Halloween-ish ribbon. I used every last scrap on this one because I uses all 4 wire circles.

Candy Corn Garland...

I saw this candy corn garland here and decided that I need to make one.

I didn't read her entire tutorial. I tend not to do that but word of the wise. It's a must because you could make mistakes like I did. The only thing I read was candy corn, thread and needle. Nuff said right? Nope, she explains not to use the cheap candy corn, which is what I bought. Why, don't use the cheap stuff? Because it breaks when stick the needle through it.

After breaking about half a bag I decided I needed to try something else. Then it dawned on me that if the candy corn was a little warm it would go through easier. 10 seconds in the microwave seemed to do the trick, I had far less brake then before. But I would still say dont buy the cheap stuff.

Must be a trend to hang your spider from your light. I have seen it with a few girls here in town and a few more via the web. Trendy trendy!

Stringing them all together took some time, a lot of time. I saw on another blog someone decided to hot glue them to twine instead of string them all together. Hers were all uniform though and I kind of like this messy look better.

And I forgot to take a picture of the chewed on candy corn that S decided he wanted to eat. I had sprayed the garland and hung it out back to dry, well I guess it was in reach for the little boy and he started nibbling on it like it was a candy necklace. Yes he ate a few with clear gloss on them. Yuck!

Smiles for Life-AAWD...

I was VERY fortunate and thrilled to be asked to take part in the Smiles for Life-AAWD. AAWD is the American Association of Women Dentists, who have put on a fashion show for the last 3 years, this year makes 4. The Smiles for Life event creates a fund for victims of domestic violence so they can receive free dental care at UK. The event consists of a fashion show, brunch and silent auction as well as a few vendors who donate part of their proceeds. ALL of the money that comes in for the event is donated to the Bluegrass Domestic Violence Center.

How lucky was I to be a vendor? Second line on the left... Sage K and Co.

I asked my friend beth to help me out, I had a hunch that I might need it. She was super cool about staying with me when it got incredibly busy considering she has a HUGE test coming up.

There were a few vendors, one was Lexington Healing Arts which offered a short massage right there. Another jewelry vendor who sat behind us, I would explain her jewelry as old lady-ish. Don't get me wrong, I like some of it but I can see my grandma and Aunt Carol (grandpa's sister) going nuts over there. I was extremely happy to be selling my earrings to such a young crowd, it did me well!

The set up, left side

right side

I sold my earrings as singles but they did really well in sets too.

And yes I made (painted, attached and whatever else) the frames and fabric pin board. In fact I worked long and hard to 3 days straight to get ready for this.

I decided I would give away two pairs of earrings (marketing ploy), it was a total hit and by chance a mom and daughter who entered at different times won.
You might want to stay tuned you may get a chance like this every once in a while.

And me, looking like a dork!

The brunch was amazing and the fashion show was really fun to watch, everyone came out in super stylish clothes and had so much fun being up there. Even some of the teachers participated in the show.

This is Dr. Larken

Dr. Abadi

I didn't put any pictures up of the girls or guys because I thought that might be kind of weird since we're not best-ies! I am glad I could donate some of my proceeds, I had a great time and am so appreciative I was invited!
